T. E. Lawrence to Lady Astor

119 Clarence Road
East Cowes
Isle of Wight

10. July 1933

Dear Peeress

Three things, my memory says, upon which to congratulate you: order of merit:-

(1) Personal. Your tact in ceding at golf to the Prince of Wales. That is admirable, wholly admirable.

(2) Social. Your good-fortune in having the new National Sporting Club as your neighbour in St. James Square. When an evening falls dull you can just step in and see a little boxing.

[7 lines omitted]

My own affairs march well. But it should have been Epstein and not Strobl.*

Yours proletariately

T. E. Shaw

Tailpiece

The prophet's house was reduced lately to a cinder. I sent condolences and the monster replied:-

'Yes, all my clothes were lost, but are well covered by insurance'... what would you put for the price of the P's clothes?... 'I was lucky to be sleeping at All Souls, so Pat' (his wife, only) 'was alone in the house.'

*I refer to your affairs again, of course. Unselfish

T.E.S.
