T. E. Lawrence to D. G. Hogarth
[Karachi]
21.4.27
[23 lines omitted]
Your Doughty discoveries are interesting. Where did he learn his
geology, and his survey work? His map was surprisingly good, all things
considered: and he laid a sort of foundation of our knowledge of the
Arabian watersheds. There was much more of the scientist in the old
man's intention, when he went down with the Haj (of his secondary
intention, anyhow) than of the poet.
I sent you one
letter of his which turned up amongst Clouds Hill papers here. I do not
know where my other Doughty letters can be. There is only Barton St. and
Clouds Hill, and I turned all the papers out of Clouds Hill before I
left it. The cottage is going to be let. [22 lines omitted]
