T. E. Lawrence to

Military Intelligence Office
Cairo

3.7.15

There is nothing happening here except great talk, and the continual supply of all sorts of things to the Mediterranean Expedition. It seems to me that that particular job is nearly finished. No news from Syria that matters. Most of the Syrian troops are in Adrianople watching the Bulgars. Syria itself is very quiet; corn cheaper than it has ever been, and sugar and paraffin unobtainable. No coal. Gold is plentiful in the country, and the Government has not ventured to issue notes. The young men have nearly all gone on military service. Oppenheim went to Jerablus on the 15th. I fancy not with good intentions. Everything here very hot and unpleasant. Map-total is now 140,000, and still growing. I'd like Will's job of teaching musketry better than this continual weariness of bricks without straw!
